On the 18th of September, Global Tech Partners had the pleasure of hosting a Cyber Security Circle at International Chamber House in Melbourne, in partnership with the German-Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce. The breakfast session brought together experts from industry and academia to explore the rapidly evolving world of cyber threats and how AI is being used by both attackers and defenders in the cybersecurity space.

Key Insights from the Cyber Security Circle

The discussion yielded several key insights:

  • Cybersecurity moves at breakneck speed — what worked last month may already be outdated.

  • Core protections still matter: strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, and timely system updates are essential.

  • Breach inevitability: Breaches are a question of when, not if. Organisations need clear incident response plans, defined roles, and communication strategies before a crisis hits.

  • Australia’s Cyber Security Strategy 2030: This strategy sets ambitious goals, but success depends on developing local talent and aligning policies across organisations.

  • Collaboration is key: Effective cybersecurity is more than tools — it requires collaboration, trust, and communication across every level of an organisation.

The Role of AI in Cyber Defence

Looking ahead, it is crucial to focus on the role of AI in cyber defence. AI is reshaping the threat landscape. It helps in identifying vulnerabilities and predicting potential attacks. However, it also empowers attackers with advanced tools. Therefore, cybersecurity professionals must be equipped with the skills needed to meet these challenges.

Preparing for Future Threats

As technology evolves, so do the tactics of cybercriminals. Organisations must stay informed about the latest trends in cybersecurity. Regular training and updates on new technologies can help in building a resilient defence.

Building a Cyber-Resilient Culture

Creating a culture of cybersecurity within an organisation is vital. Employees should understand their role in protecting sensitive information. Regular workshops and training sessions can foster awareness and preparedness.

Conclusion

A big thank you to panelists Jason Murrell and Andrew Cullen for sharing their expertise, and to AHK Australien for facilitating meaningful conversations across sectors. The insights gained from this event are invaluable as we navigate the complexities of cybersecurity in today's digital landscape.
